The History of Picaflor House
Picaflor House was founded by Jim Elliott, Globalteer’s General Manager in 2010. After spending several years in Cambodia setting up an after school programme in Siem Riep, Jim moved to Peru where he recognized the need for a similar after school programme in the region of Cusco as he saw children wandering the streets with no organized after school activities.
After visiting a number of communities and speaking with community members, Jim found that there was the most need in Oropesa, and decided to open Picaflor House in November 2010.
For the first year, Picaflor House, worked out of the local school in Oropesa, and taught classes three times per week on English, Art, and Mathematics.
Over the past 3 years, Picaflor has grown to serve approximately 45 children. Classes now include an Academic Programme focused on Mathematics and Reading Comprehension; Non Academic Programme including Chess, Sports, Photography, Music, Traditional Dance; Health and Hygiene Programme; English Programme and Homework Support. Most recently Picaflor House began working more closely with the community and installed several cleaner burning stoves in the family’s homes to reduce indoor air pollution.
Through volunteer support and donations we are able to continue working with the children of Oropesa through Picaflor House. Previous donations have supported our Health & Hygiene Programme, financed our play equipment and supported our teachers and classes to continue providing academic and non-academic support to children in Oropesa.
